Engine experts, including those at Mc Donnell Douglas Transportation Department and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) have demonstrated that the majority of mechanical engine wear occurs during engine startup. In fact one study states, "Ninety to 95% of the (mechanical) wear occurs in the first 10 seconds in the start of an engine." Most engines are run, then turned off hot. As the engine cools, the lubricating fluid drips back into the pan. The lubricant cools and thickens and becomes tough to pump.
